Introduction

The TAC is a series of sniper rifles of US origin. The TAC was designed by McMillan in the 1990's and is available in three calibers. Unlike the TAC-50, which is described seperately, the TAC series is not derived from the M87R anti-materiel rifle, but from the M86 sniper rifle.

Design

The TAC series of sniper rifles are based around a fiberglass chassis with a fixed butt and adjustable cheekpiece and buttpad. The TAC series uses a G30 bolt action mechanism and feed from either detachable box magazines or an internal magazine. The barrels are match grade and free floating. A bipod is optional. Various optics can be installed and iron sights are not present.

Firepower

The TAC-308 fires the 7.62x51mm NATO round, the TAC-300 the .300 Winchester Magnum and the TAC-338 the .338 Lapua Magnum. The effective range of the rifle varies per caliber. The maximum effective range of the TAC-308 with 24 inch barrel is about 1.000 meters, the TAC-338 may be used up to 1.500 meters.

Users

The TAC series is probably in use with various law enforcement units in the USA.

Variants

TAC-308

The TAC-308 is the smallest and least powerful rifle in the TAC lineup. It is chambered for the 7.62x51mm NATO round and uses detachable box magazines. The TAC-308A has a 20 inch barrel and is meant for urban use. The TAC-308B has a longer 24 inch barrel with threaded muzzle.
